LOUISIANA BAYOU CYPRESS (2018)
Collage: ink on paper and digital archival prints mounted on canvas
Each 84″ × 36″
The bayous of Louisiana are marsh wetlands where the river meets the sea. There, De St. Croix found this stand of expired cypress trees. Industrial companies had carved out a deep channel for their barges to reach inland rigs. When they did that, it destroyed the buffer that protects the bayou. It opened up the marshes to a flood of saltwater, leaving an entire forest of cypress trees dead from the salt exposure. In turn, this makes the cities near the shoreline more vulnerable during hurricanes.
