MOUNTAIN STRIP MINE LANDSCAPES (2009)

Each 24″ × 18″
The Mountain Strip Mine Landscapes drawing series is based upon Blane De St. Croix’s travels to strip mines and their associated communities in West Virginia. Research for the project incorporated travel to abandoned and active strip mines, as well as interviews with anti-strip mining activists, regional green organizations and child services agencies, working miners, and local residents. Extensive documentation was undertaken through on the ground field research, as well as aerial surveys of the strip mines.
The artist’s research keyed in on Kayford Mountain, an extremely heavily mined area in West Virginia.
